One of the worst effects of the wide spread under-performance of our schools is -- illiteracy.
According to the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), only 12% of U.S. 15-year olds possess the top-level reading literacy skills necessary to understand complex texts, evaluate information and build hypotheses.
This is an egregious waste of talent and utterly avoidable. Research shows that most students leave the primary grades as competent readers. Despite this good start, 88% of students fail to become fully literate for one simple reason -- vocabulary. Vocabulary training in most schools is sporadic, unorganized and inefficient.
Verbocity eliminates literacy failures and allows any student, even a below average student, to develop the top-level literacy skills necessary for success in the Information Age.
